Back Panel submits report on dairy farming

Kottayam, Nov. 3 The expert committee appointed by the State Government to introduce livestock and dairy farming sector reforms has called for investment to the tune of Rs 3,240 crore in these sectors in three years.

The committee headed by Mr R. Hali has also recommended the formation of a Kerala State Livestock Development Finance Corporation to help the farmers and various agencies.

Mr Hali presented the 380-page report to the Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, in the presence of the Food Minister, Mr C. Divakaran.

Among other things, the committee has also recommended setting up of a Kerala State Livestock Development Council. There are specific proposals for increasing milk production and introduction of ‘Go-dana’ and ‘Go-karunya ’ schemes.

Other proposals are a heifer park, healthcare facilities for animals, modernisation of rural dairy cooperatives, an animal husbandry training centre at Kodappanakunnu and expansion of the activities of Milma.
