Back Bangalore airport security on high alert

Our Bureau

Bangalore, Nov. 27 The normally hypersensitive Bengaluru International Airport has been put on high alert, one step away from ‘red’, Mr Digvijay Singh, Commandant of CISF at the BIA, told Business Line.

The security level was raised immediately after the terror news broke out last night, even before the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security notified the threat, he said. “We are now on high alert,” Mr Singh confirmed without giving the numbers deployed.

“Two additional components of quick reaction teams with AK47s have been brought in, including at the car parking and city-side approach. A third component has been deployed for the Haj departures that are going on now.”

Bangalore falls in the hypersensitive category along with Mumbai and Delhi. “At these times it goes higher, as at other international airports.”

Some armed personnel in plain clothes are also on the vigil.

The six-month-old BIA, with 925 CISF personnel, has thrice the security numbers compared to 325 at the old HAL airport, Mr Singh said.

A BIAL spokeswoman said security and CISF were in a high state of alertness with visitor entries being screened thoroughly.
