Govt leases out 2 sugar mills

Chennai, Nov. 7 The Tamil Nadu Government has constituted a committee headed by the Chief Secretary, Mr L.K. Tripathi, to formulate a policy and frame guidelines for acquiring land for industrial use.

An official press release said this was among the decisions taken at a meeting of the Tamil Nadu Cabinet here on Wednesday. The Government also decided to lease out two sugar mills and approved formation of a new district for administrative convenience.

Policy for land acquisition

A committee headed by the Chief Secretary will create a policy and guidelines to govern land acquisition for projects such as special economic zones, industrial parks and industries. The draft of the policy would be studied by a committee of ministers to the formed by the Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunandhi, before being approved.

The State Government has also decided to lease out two sugar mills, the Madurantakam Cooperative Sugar Mill and the public sector Pandiarajapuram Madura Sugar Mills, to enable them to recommence operations. This would be through an open tender system and the leasor would be permitted to set up cogeneration and ethanol production facilities.

In line with the decision taken at the all-party meeting on May 22, the 1,069.99 acres of land identified for the expansion and modernisation of the Chennai airport would be handed over to Airports Authority of India, the release said.

The Cabinet also decided to form a new district, Ariyalur, which is to be carved out of Perambalur district.
