Back Tuna fishing has bright prospects More and more fishing trawlers are getting converted into tuna-tapping vessels as the prospects of tuna fishing in India have brightened with the international community turning to this country for the fish, which is in great demand in the US and Europe. The process of conversion started in 2002 with two vessels, which rose to 6 in 2006. Recently, 21 tuna-tapping vessels were flagged off at Vizag port’s fishing harbour. It is felt that by the end of the year, the tot al number will rise to 100. The Union Government is also providing support to expedite conversion estimated to cost Rs 30 lakh per vessel. Marine Products Export Development Authority extends 50 per cent subsidy to those opting for conversion. Last year, tuna fish worth Rs 130 crore were exported. This figure is expected to touch $500 million by 2012. OUR BUREAU © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu Business Line |
