Back Govt mulls water supply from Kudremukh to Mangalore

Mangalore, Aug. 15 The Karnataka Government is contemplating to use the pipeline infrastructure from Kudremukh to Mangalore for supplying water to Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts from Kudremukh, according to Mr B. Nagaraja Shetty, Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister.

Speaking after unfurling the national flag at the 60th Independence Day celebration in Mangalore on Wednesday, Mr Shetty said this water can be used for drinking and industrial purposes of these districts.

It may be mentioned here that the Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd had laid pipeline from Kudremukh to Mangalore to bring iron ore slurry from Kudremukh mines to the pellet plant of the company in Mangalore. Now the company has stopped mining activity in Kudremukh following a Supreme Court order in this regard. In another development, the Government has given administrative sanction for the construction of a vented dam across river Netravati at Thumbay in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district.

This will help improve water supply to Mangalore city. The dam will be built at a cost of Rs 40 crore.

It has been decided to begin work on the project soon, he said.

Thanking the Infosys Foundation for constructing the Regional Advanced Paediatric Care Centre at a cost of Rs 6 crore in premises of the Government Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore, he said this facility would help people from several neighbouring districts of Dakshina Kannada.

The building has been handed over to the Government, and formal inauguration will take place on November 14, he said.
