Part of its community welfare programme

Kolkata June 21 Tata Motors on Thursday initiated its health programme in Singur, with the first health checkup camp, says a press release. During the camp, held at Joymollah village, a general physician and a gynaecologist attended to residents from several villages. The company also provided medicines free of cost.

Tata Motors will organise such camps at periodic intervals. Going forward, the health initiative will include a fully equipped mobile medical clinic, staffed by a doctor, a nurse and a compounder.

The health initiative is part of Tata Motors' comprehensive community development and welfare programme for Singur, which also focuses on employability-oriented training, and women's employability.

Tata Motors, along with the West Bengal Government and the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC), has already started extensive training — 17 youth are being trained at the company's Jamshedpur facility, while another 340 individuals have been placed in two select Industrial Training Institutes and the Ramakrishna Mission Shilpa Mandir. More such training initiatives will follow.

For the employability of women, adds the release, the company and the WBIDC have begun to facilitate formation of self-help groups which will produce various items required for the Tata Motors plant and the vendors' plants.

The first such SHG has already become operational and is supplying food at the project site.
