New Delhi, April 13

The Government has approved the "Preparedness, Control and Containment of Avian Influenza (AI) (Animal Health Component)" scheme, which has been allocated Rs 134.78 crore for the next three years, starting from March 2007-08. The scheme is to help the country meet breakouts such as the bird flu. The project is supported by the World Bank, which is to reimburse Rs 126 crore. The approval came during a Cabinet meeting today.

The Union Cabinet meanwhile approved an agreement in the field of vaccine research, between India and International Institute of Vaccine, Seoul, Korea. Under the collaboration, India could — with a place on Board of Trustees — play a role in formulation of international policy related to vaccines. The signing of the agreement does not have any financial implication for the Government of India.
