Back Tidco calls bids for solid waste management

Chennai April 1 The Chennai Corporation has decided to extend the privatisation of municipal solid waste management to more areas in the city.

According to the international bids called for by the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, the nodal agency for identifying the private sector player on behalf of the corporation, the municipal solid waste handling in Adyar zone would be privatised.

This would be in addition to the three zones of Pulianthope, Ice House and Kodambakkam, where the operations were privatised in 2000.

C.E.S. Onyx Pvt Ltd, a part of CGEA Asia Holdings, Singapore, was handling the solid waste management service in the three areas, for which the contract period has now ended.

The total quantity of municipal solid waste in the four zones is estimated at 1,400 tonnes a day. Developers, firms and consortia with a track record in municipal solid waste management are eligible to apply.

The Request for Qualification forms will be available from April 2 to 27. The last date for submitting the documents is May 2.

Based on the 2001 census, Chennai has a population of 43.43 lakh. It generates 3,200 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily. There are 10 zones in the city and the Chennai Corporation is responsible for solid waste management in the areas other than those being privatised. It has privatised waste management in select main roads.
