Hyderabad Feb. 20 A national centre of excellence for basic research in mathematics, statistics and computer sciences has been established at the Hyderabad Central University (HCU).

Named after well-known statistics personality Prof C.R. Rao, the Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science would take up cutting edge research in these inter-related areas, according to Dr Rangarajan, former RBI Governor and Chairman of Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister.

FOCUS AREAS

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Prof Rao said research activity would look into areas like bio-informatics, nano technologies and defence-related issues.

Though it would take two years to have its own campus in a five-acre plot, the institute would start functioning immediately at a facility provided by the HCU.

The institute, which would have a corpus of Rs 50 crore, would offer doctoral and post-doctoral studies, besides hosting lectures and short-term courses.
