Chennai , Nov. 27

Swedish telecommunication company Ericsson today inaugurated its research and development facility in Chennai. The Chennai centre would develop `charging solutions' and value-added services, including "electronic top-up" and multimedia messaging. Charging solutions are software that handle payments for content, services and applications.

The centre, which has around 50 employees, would closely work with Ericsson's global R&D team in Sweden, according to Mr Mats Granryd, Managing Director, Ericsson India.

Ericsson would also consider setting up a manufacturing plant in or around Chennai to make telecom-networking equipment. "There is no (specific) plan at this moment. We are committed to our earlier announcement of spending $100 million (Rs 450 crore) annually for the next three years in India," he told newspersons.
