A vendor packing roasted maize at a shop in Thrissur, Kerala. Maize output during the current kharif season is estimated to be down by 1.4 million tonnes (mt) to 11 mt. Rising demand for maize for food, feed and industrial purpose (starch) has tightened supplies and prices. Currently, maize prices are ruling around Rs 1,300 a quintal, up from Rs 800 a quintal on demand and low stocks. However, the Centre has stepped in to help the poultry sector by offering maize from its stocks at Rs 450 a quintal.
