Elected representatives from the district submit proposal seeking Rs 120 cr

The Karnataka Government is in talks with the Andhra Pradesh Government for taking possession of 7.4 acres at Tirupati Tirumala on a 50-year lease, according to the Karnataka Fisheries and Religious Endowment Minister, Mr B. Nagaraj Shetty.

Speaking to newspersons, Mr Shetty said that the Karnataka Government would build 286 rooms on the area for the benefit of visitors from Karnataka.

The project cost of the building will be around Rs 37 crore; and the Karnataka Government has earmarked Rs 5 crore for it.

He added that Religious Endowment Ministry could get orders once the land is handed over.

He discussed the matter with Andhra Pradesh Government officials during a recent visit to Hyderabad.

For DK development

Mr Shetty said that elected representatives from Dakshina Kannada district have submitted a proposal seeking a Rs 120-crore special package for overall development of the district. The proposals already agreed to by the Government are not included in this package, which comprises widening and upgradation of roads in rural areas and towns.

Provision for drinking water supply is a priority area. The package also focuses on the construction of new bridges in some areas and upgradation of some others.

In this regard, the proposal suggested the construction of check dams in various parts of the district, completion of half-built stadiums and establishment of primary health centres and veterinary hospitals wherever required. "We will come out with the project within a week. The Chief Minister has agreed to look into it." The Government has released Rs 60 lakh for repairing roads in the Shiradi Ghat area on Bangalore-Mangalore highway, he added.

The Minister handed over cheques to 46 families whose lands have been acquired for the airport expansion project in Mangalore.
