SHIFTING PREFERENCES: Groundnut being packed at a shop in Thrissur in Kerala. Kharif oilseeds acreage has declined by over 10 lakh hectare (lh) and most of this is on account of the decline in groundnut sowing from 53.54 lh last year to 43.23 lh this year. Drought conditions in the northern States and farmers shifting to cotton are cited as reasons for the fall in coverage.
