Indo-Afghan business forum to be set up

Ashwini Phadnis

NEW DELHI, July 29

IN an effort to promote bilateral trade ties between India and Afghanistan, the Indo-Afghan Business Forum, which is to have top-level representation from trade and industry of the two countries, is to be set up on September 26.

"The five persons from the Afghan side to be members of the forum have been identified and now we can truly say that the body will be launched on September 26, the day the `Made in India' show opens in Kabul,'' the Head of International Division of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Mr Piyush Bahl, told Business Line. Among the five Afghans who will be members include an influential banker, Mr Mohd Kabir Arghandiwal, and a well-established entrepreneur, Mr K. Muttreja, who are keen to sell Indian motorcycles and pharmaceutical products in Afghanistan.

"What is significant is that all the five Afghan representatives on the forum are keen to not only do business with India but also boost bilateral trade and co-operation,'' Mr Bahl said.

On the Indian representation on the forum, the CII officials said this would be firmed up closer to the date of the `Made in India' show starting in Kabul.

They felt that the recent decision of the Afghan Cabinet to pass a new investment law would also go a long way in helping to promote India-Afghan trade and investment ties.

Meanwhile, in an effort to attract more participation for the show, the chamber is to advertise in Farsi, the commonly spoken language in Kabul, on Kabul television.
